Piano Location
Our Approach Today
The Public Piano Project began with a bold vision: to fill our streets with music, creativity, and connection, one piano at a time. Over the years, we’ve seen that vision come to life in incredible ways, thanks to the support of artists, volunteers, communities, and partners.
As with many not-for-profit initiatives, our focus has evolved. We’ve shifted from placing as many pianos as possible to creating a more sustainable model.
With increasing costs and limited volunteer capacity, we now prioritize quality over quantity: fewer pianos, stronger partnerships, and longer-term value for the communities we serve.
We remain committed to our mission of making music accessible, spontaneous, and public. And we’re always looking for new partners, funders, and supporters to help keep the music going.
Want to Bring a Piano to Your Community?
If you’re interested in placing a public piano in your neighbourhood, we’d love to hear from you. Although we no longer operate on a large scale, we continue to install pianos each season through meaningful community partnerships and sponsorships.
Bringing a piano to your street involves planning, transportation, tuning, maintenance, and often, beautiful design—and we rely on financial support to make it possible.

How Locations Are Selected
Every public piano is placed with a purpose. None of our locations are random. Each one is chosen with intention, vision, and a clear rationale, designed to bring music into spaces where it can connect with people and spark something meaningful.
We carefully consider each site through a blend of community interest, environmental factors, accessibility, and artistic impact. Behind every placement, there’s a story and a reason it belongs there.
What We Consider
Community Interest & Engagement
We prioritize neighbourhoods where there’s strong interest from residents, organizations, or businesses.
Community support helps ensure the piano is loved, appreciated, and well-maintained.
Foot Traffic & Visibility
Locations with steady foot traffic help create spontaneous moments of connection.
Ideal sites invite play, listening, and interaction.
Ambient Sound & Artistic Energy
The surrounding environment matters: sound levels, emotional tone, and aesthetic vibe are all taken into consideration.
We aim to place pianos in spaces that feel inviting, expressive, and emotionally resonant.
Physical Suitability
Sites must be flat, level, and accessible to ensure the piano is playable and secure.
We assess weather exposure and nearby infrastructure when needed.
Property & Municipal Requirements
Public installations must meet city, park board, or private property guidelines.
We work closely with municipal departments and private partners to ensure compliance and collaboration.
Uniqueness & Storytelling
Some locations are chosen for their symbolism or emotional impact, from quiet corners to iconic spaces.
Over the years, we’ve placed pianos on mountaintops, beaches, parks, lakesides, bridges, community centres, festivals, malls, and city streets, each one contributing to the larger story of the Public Piano Project.
